Development, with all the diverse definitions it has had since its emergence, has been grounded in the will to master and overcome nature. The will to mastery is the prelude to development, and it also indicates the relationship that modern humanity has found with the existence of beings. In this relationship, both nature and humanity are subjugated; with this subjugation, both nature and humans are endangered. Although this relationship has roots in some aspects of human existence, it is not the genuine, intrinsic relationship of a human being. The genuine relationship of a person with other beings and with others is one of companionship, affection, and friendship. Now the question is: can there be a development that is founded on companionship, affection, and friendship, so that instead of harming nature and humans, it strives to preserve, protect, and elevate them? If development means construction (sākhtan), contemplation of construction (sākhtan) suggests that genuine development is not domination, conquest, or harmful control, but care, vigilance, peace, reconciliation, and harmony.
