Islamic Roots of the Concepts of 'Natura Naturans' and 'Natura Naturata' in Spinoza’s Philosophy

Abstract
Professor Dr. Muhammad Bayrakdar, a faculty member of the Department of Philosophy at Ankara University, published this article in 1999 in Turkish under the title "Spinoza'nın Natura Naturans ve Natura Naturata Kavramlarının İslami Kökenleri" in the Journal of the Faculty of Theology (Edebiyat Fakültesi Dergisi) of Ankara University (No. 40, pp. 291-299). The author seeks to re-examine, and address questions related to the subject of the concepts of Natura Naturans and Natura Naturata based on the research of contemporary Western thinkers. However, it is worth mentioning that the author focuses more on demonstrating the Islamic roots of these two concepts and believes that Jābir ibn Ḥayyān was the first to use them, and then they were transmitted to Ibn Rushd through other thinkers such as Abu Ḥayyān al-Tawḥῑdῑ and Abu Sulaimān al-Sijistānῑ. The examination and referencing of discussions to the works of the mentioned Islamic philosophers, although a concise research and report, highlights the importance of considering the evolution of the meaning of concepts and encouraging the reader to pursue the original sources of early Islamic philosophers, which is worthy of attention and reflection. It is worth mentioning that the author has dedicated his article to his mentor, Dr. Necati Öner (Prof. Dr. Necati Öner). In fact, the fortieth issue of the Journal of the Faculty of Theology of Ankara University, according to the title “A Gift to Professor Dr. Necati Öner” printed on its cover, was an issue commemorating his retirement.
